A crane operator saved himself from death by crushing after running away from the toppling machine in the nick of time.

Footage shows how a heavy object the mobile crane is trying to lift starts weighing it down and pulling it forward.

The back wheels lift into the air as the machine starts toppling forward.

Loud yells of “Watch out!” and “Drop it!” can be heard ringing out from horrified workers at the scene.

As the front of the cab is pointing towards the ground at about 45 degrees, a man can be seen running nimbly down the track.

He jumps down from the pier the crane is on a split-second before the cab lands on its roof and is crushed.

His close shave happened yesterday (23 October) at the Port of Antofagasta, northern Chile, as reported by Need To Know.

The mishap took place during work to take down installations made by a construction firm to expand a desalination plant.

The Antofagasta Port Company reported that no one was injured as a result of the accident, nor was there any environmental damage.

It said: “The Port of Antofagasta activated its safety protocol, which includes notifying the maritime authority, the Port Captaincy, who are already on site.”

One social media user commented: “Was worried for the driver when he didn’t stay put, but dude made the right call with the way that cab just crumpled.”

Another wrote: “As a regular user of it, I imagine he might have had a sense for how flimsy the cab was and made a quick call.”

A third said: “Stay inside the cab at all times! Possible exception: when the entire weight of the crane is about to be on top of the cab.”

And a fourth remarked: “He almost got slapped back in by the door too. An instant more of delay and he’d be way worse.”
