Hero medics saved a pregnant woman’s baby via an emergency C-section after she was injured in a horror bus crash.

Eighteen people died when the bus overturned as it rolled down a steep slope next to the road on Sunday (24 Nov).

Of the 48 people on board, 30 survived and were taken to a nearby hospital in União dos Palmares, Brazil.

Among the injured was Jacqueline Nunes, who was eight months pregnant.

In a bid to save her unborn baby, she was given an emergency C-section.

Nunes later told local media: “I was a warrior, a true warrior. Getting all the way up there and going through everything I did.

“The baby’s heartbeat was racing, and they decided to do a caesarean. It all happened so quickly – it didn’t even take half an hour.”

Newborn Kailan is now out of danger.

He has two siblings, who weren’t on the ill-fated bus.

Nunes credits her and Kailan’s survival to a good Samaritan.

She said: “I’m just so grateful for everything. A capoeira practitioner rescued me, helped me climb the hill, and got me to safety.

“He was a guardian angel in my life.”

At the time of reporting, both mother and son remained under observation and were waiting to be discharged to join their family.

Sixteen of the deceased, aged five to 84, had been identified as of Monday (25 Nov).

Forensic pathologists were still working to identify an elderly man and a woman.

Those on board the bus were enroute to the Quilombo dos Palmares Memorial Park to take part in Black Consciousness Day celebrations.

As it tumbled down the slope, many were thrown out of the bus, which ended up mangled and on its roof.

Among the deceased was driver Luciano de Queiroz Araújo.

The 47-year-old had reported brake issues on the day of the accident, according to his wife.

The vehicle – a school bus – had last been inspected in October, as reported by Need To Know.

Lead investigator Guilherme Iusten said: “So far, it’s been determined that the bus was in working condition.

“It was a relatively new vehicle and had undergone a mandatory inspection for school buses, which takes place every six months, on 13 October.

“The tyres were in good condition. In short, the bus was indeed fit for use.”

The police are investigating the case.
