He will need to undergo surgery and has reported the incident to police with the intention of filing a complaint, according to reports.
Cameras set up on the football pitch caught the moment the brutal attack took place.
The match was being played as part of a competition run by the amateur football league, Colonias and Cerros, which is based in Olavarría, Argentina.
In the footage, Diego, who is part of Club De Amigos, can be casually walking across the pitch.
He puts his thumb up as Alejandro, on the opposing team, Cerrito, runs toward him.
The player in green and white appears to run with urgency before whacking him in the face.
Alejandro’s right-hand wraps around Diego’s neck.
He then collapses to the ground.
A man wearing a purple top appears to clock what is about to happen but is not able to intervene in time.
He can be seen guiding the aggressive player away from the scene.
Others begin to rush over to check on Diego, who is lying face down on the pitch.
The reason for the assault, which occurred in the plus 35 category of the contest, is not known.
Colonias and Cerros have since taken action against Cerrito and the player.
Alejandro has been expelled for life from any future games held by Colonias and Cerros, as reported by Need To Know.
Cerrito was expelled from the tournament and will not be able to register for future competitions organised by the group.
Colonias and Cerros addressed the incident on their social media accounts on 10 January.
They wrote: “In a regrettable act of violence from the Colonias and Cerros organisation, we repudiate these anti-sports and marginal behaviours.
“We will not allow people or teams to tarnish our trajectory by not understanding the spirit that we have been preaching for 10 seasons.
“Things happen everywhere and we must not hide them.
“Rather than take exemplary measures in the face of what happened, we will continue working to improve category 35 and we put ourselves at the disposal of the player and the team that was attacked.
“For a football without violence, for a healthy sport, get rid of the misfits.”
