A woman with a hugely swollen stomach was admitted to hospital, where a scan revealed a huge tumour weighing 34lbs in her ovaries.
Following a CT scan, the 42-year-old was diagnosed with a giant mucinous ovarian cystadenocarcinoma (MOC) – a rare, and potentially lethal, tumour that causes the abdomen to distend.
The patient, who wasn’t named, underwent surgery to remove the growth, with the tumour measuring 30x30x10cm and weighing 15.6kg (34lbs).

While there, the woman also underwent a hysterectomy to remove the uterus and cervix, and a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy to remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes to avoid it returning, with MCOs prone to recurring.

The patient is believed to have been treated in Damascus, Syria, reports Need To Know.

MOCs typically occur in women aged 20-50, and is often diagnosed at an early stage, but a giant form of it, such as in this case, is “extremely rare”.
Doctors on the case said early detection in such cases is “critical” due to “vague” symptoms including stomach pain.

They added: “The rarity of giant MOC tumours necessitates a high index of suspicion, careful evaluation, and individualized treatment strategies to ensure optimal patient outcomes.”
Following surgery, the woman was discharged in “excellent general condition” without complications.
