The captain decided to return to the departure airport as an emergency.
The scary ordeal took place on a flight from Tegucigalpa to Roatán in Honduras yesterday (6 Feb).
After landing safely at Toncontín International Airport in Tegucigalpa, National Police officers boarded the aircraft and arrested the suspect.
He was subdued with no injuries reported.
Passengers had to disembark the ATR 72 to take another flight to the island resort of Roatán, as reported by Need To Know.
It is unclear how the unnamed man managed to get the firearm inside the aircraft.
The airline has not been named.
The two that operate the route with ATR 72 planes, CM Airlines and TagAirlines, have yet to release a statement on the incident.
One local said: “They must have very ineffective passenger screening going on at that airport, very dangerous if it happened during the flight.”

Anette asked: “How did he get onboard with a firearm in the first place?”
ART 72 and CM Airlines have been approached for comment.
