In CCTV footage, he was seen lurking around a shopping centre wearing a mask like the one from the 1996 horror movie, complete with an all-black outfit.
When he realised he was trapped, he crouched behind a pile of cardboard boxes, where he stayed for an entire night.
According to police, he arrived at around 5pm at the shopping centre in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Monday (17 Mar).
He reportedly told police that he had studied the location three days prior to the attempted theft, as reported by Need To Know.
He was said to have hid in the shopping centre until it closed.
He allegedly opened the lock attached to the iron gate of the gold shop and entered, closing the gate behind him.
The thief is said to have grabbed some gold necklaces but then realised that the iron gate could not be lifted from the inside due to an obstruction.
He panicked as he searched for another exit, but was forced to hide behind a pile of boxes, it is alleged.
It was at 9am on Tuesday (18 Mar), when staff arrived for work, and they noticed signs of break-in outside the shop.
When they entered, he was said to have cowered behind the counter before employees locked him in and alerted police.
He was arrested, and reportedly told police that he had needed money so that he could study for a bachelor’s degree at university.
The suspect allegedly expressed remorse for his actions as he now faces charges of attempted theft and the destruction of a barrier.
