The Academy Awards, or the Oscars as it’s better known, is seen as the most prestigious achievement in the world of cinema. For nearly a century, the Oscars have celebrated the best in cinema and rewarded thespians for their brilliance on the silver screen. Today, we will talk about some of the unknown facts about the Oscars and films that have won awards at the event.

One of the greatest animated films ever made is Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. More than three decades after its premiere, it remains a timeless classic. The movie was nominated in the Best Picture category at the 1992 Academy Awards, becoming the first animated film in Oscar history to receive a Best Picture nod.

The Silence of the Lambs, however, was the odds-on favourite to win that year. The Silence of the Lambs won the Best Picture award, as the bookies had predicted, but Beauty and the Beast did not return empty-handed. It picked up three Oscars in the song, score, and sound categories, but the Best Picture award remained out of reach.

Many Oscar-winning films have had such a wide-ranging impact on culture that they have even inspired online casino slots. Microgaming’s Jurassic Park is the first one that comes to mind. The Steven Spielberg classic won three Academy Awards and remains a pop-culture icon to this day.

Microgaming made a visually rich slot that pays tribute to the incredible visual effects of the film. Every time players win; the game plays a scene inspired by the movie. It’s one of the best casino games Microgaming has developed, paying tribute to the film’s legacy.

Dirty Dancing and Rocky are two other Oscar winning films that sparked online games. Playtech developed both of these, and they are still quite fun to play despite being a little dated.

In the Dirty Dancing slot, you will quickly recognise the electronic rendition of the iconic “Time of My Life” theme song of the film. It plays throughout the game. You will also find several nostalgic elements that faithfully recreates the ‘60s atmosphere.

As for the Rocky slot, Playtech borrowed from the Oscar-winning original and the sequels. This slot brings Rocky Balboa and Adrian to the reels, with legendary foes Apollo Creed, Ivan Drago, and Clubber Lang in the mix. Land a winning combination, and iconic scenes from the film play out on the screen.

John Williams is another common face in the Oscars. The legendary composer has created several magnificent scores and most of them earned Oscar nominations. Williams received his 54th Academy Award nomination in 2024 for his Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny score. His last win, however, came in 1994 for Schindler’s List.

He earned his first Oscar nomination in 1968 for Valley of the Dolls and has been nominated in every decade since. Williams holds the unique distinction of being the only Academy Award nominee with nominations spanning seven consecutive decades. At 92, he is also the oldest living Oscar winner.

The Godfather: Part II was an incredible follow up to the 1972 original. It also became the first sequel in history to win an Academy Award in the Best Picture category. It received 11 nominations in total and bagged six wins.

One-off original stories are often the favorites for Oscar wins, but The Godfather: Part II broke that trend with its brilliant production and storytelling. Since then, only one more sequel managed to replicate Godfather II’s success.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King became the second sequel to dominate the Oscars, 30 years after Godfather: Part II’s milestone achievement. To this day, only these two films have won the Oscar Best Pictures award as sequels.
