If you’re running an E-commerce business, you’ll understand the importance of adaptation and keeping up with the times. The ways in which shoppers engage with retail are forever changing due to increasingly more accessible technology and how it makes the experience better streamlined. 

One of the hottest evolving elements of the industry happens at the payment screen, and some of the biggest challenges of running an online store are making the process as quick and seamless as possible. 

In this article, you’ll learn some important factors that go into achieving that goal.

1. Developing a Frictionless Checkout Experience

It’s important to understand that if customers experience any difficulty paying on your site, they’ll often get frustrated and click off – and it’s your job to make sure that doesn’t happen. 

Scrutinise and analyse each step a customer takes from adding an item to their basket and paying, and see if there’s anything that seems unnecessary; ultimately, you want as few clicks as possible!

2. The Importance of Offering Multiple Payment Methods

In today’s day and age, there are many different ways someone might want to pay for your products and services, and you should endeavour to offer each of them as an option. 

Alternative payment methods include PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, and several others, and many customers may also wish to choose a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) scheme (especially when it comes to more costly items). 

Some customers choose to only go with a certain payment method, so you don’t want to risk losing a sale simply by not offering all the modern ways to pay.

3. Make Sure Your Site Performs Well on Mobile Devices

The majority of your customers will be browsing your site from a mobile device, so it’s key to make sure each page is easy to navigate and loads efficiently on tablets and smartphones. 

Not only this, but it’s a good idea to have the fundamental elements of your site actually designed for these sorts of devices; feature large buttons and easy-to-scroll-through menus, and make sure you choose a bold font when displaying text. 

4. Explain the Costs Planly and Clearly 

As is the case with any business, you should do your best to explain all matters pertaining to the transfer of money as clearly as possible. 

Shipping costs and tax should be prominently displayed on the checkout screen, and if you have any subscription-based deals or bundles, don’t have them automatically ticked when someone is checking out; you should entice customers to choose one of your deals, but have them opt in rather than having it selected by default and having them have to opt out. Transparency is everything in honest business.

Payment processing is a very important aspect of running your e-commerce business, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Take the time to go through each of the steps above, and you’ll find yourself to be a much more appealing prospect for your customers. Good luck!
