The skeleton of a US tourist has washed up on a beach after apparently being eaten by sharks.

He was swept out to sea while trying to save a friend last Sunday (20 Apr).

The victim, believed to be Alejandro Gonzalez, 20, waded into the water to help his struggling pal.

The woman was rescued alive, but Alejandro ended up being dragged out to sea.

His pals reported him as missing, but search operations yielded no results.

Three days after disappearing, a skeleton washed up on a popular beach in Cancun, Mexico, where Alejandro was staying with friends.

He was swept out to sea at Chac Mool Beach, and the remains washed up just under a mile away within Cancun’s Hotel Zone.

Shocked tourists spotted the grim skeleton in the water and reported it to the authorities.

Lifeguards were filmed removing the gnawed body from the sea at around 4pm on Wednesday (23 Apr).

The body was reduced to a skeleton with a head, and was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Due to the body’s condition, the authorities suspect it was eaten by marine life, possibly sharks.

The area was immediately cordoned off while experts from the Attorney General’s Office carried out a preliminary investigation, as reported by Need To Know.

An autopsy will be carried out on the victim’s remains to confirm his identity and determine his exact cause of death.

His parents have been unable to travel to Mexico as they do not have passports.

They expressed their gratitude for the support and donations they received to cover the expenses of sending their son’s remains back to the US:

They wrote on social media: “We held onto hope and prayed for a miracle.

“Although the outcome wasn’t what we expected, God answered our prayers.

“Alejandro’s body has been found, and Matt and I will be able to bring our baby home.”

The investigation continues.
