The 37-year-old was accused of murdering his estranged wife.
Ana Knezevich Henao, 40, disappeared on 2 February last year while in Madrid, Spain.

Knezevich was initially arrested in connection with Ana’s disappearance and was charged with kidnapping her last May, according to reports.
He was later accused of kidnapping resulting in death and foreign domestic violence resulting in death.
He also faced the charge of foreign murder of a United States national.
The FBI investigated the circumstances around Ana’s disappearance alongside the Spanish National Police.
Security camera recordings, GPS tracking and text messages, which turned out to be forged, were reviewed by police.
It was concluded that Knezevich travelled from Serbia, where he was originally from, to Spain to follow his wife.

She was last spotted walking into her apartment in Madrid.
Ana, who was Colombian, previously lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with her husband, but moved to Spain in December 2023.
The move came so that she could get away from Knezevich after they went through a tumultuous separation.
According to reports, the Serbian-American IT specialist was captured on CCTV at a hardware store buying duct tape and spray paint with cash on the day Ana went missing.

The FBI believes that he carried her body out of her apartment in Madrid inside a suitcase.
Knezevich was found dead on 28 April in his cell at the Federal Detention Centre in Miami, Florida, as reported by Need To Know.
His death has been treated as a suicide.
Ana’s family have been left devastated by the news of his death as they were fearful he would not face justice, they said in a statement to the local press.
The statement read: “The suicide of Ana’s killer closes a painful chapter in our lives, previously filled with the fear that he would not face justice.

“Now, we may never know where he left Ana’s body.
“It is a cruel final insult that we can never recover the remains of Ana or know the magnitude of the betrayal she suffered.
“However, we remain committed to the search for truth and justice for Ana.”
Knezevich was set to face trial in a federal court in South Florida.
It was scheduled for later this year.
According to the local press, federal prosecutors did not plan to request the death penalty.
They had filed a case based primarily on circumstantial evidence, including security videos and GPS records.
