Luckily, officers on routine patrol spotted the rucksack on a street corner in Monterrey, Mexico, on 15 November.
The urn inside was intact.
Later that day, 42-year-old Jorge approached a policeman to report the theft and was relieved to hear it had already been recovered.
He was reunited with his mother’s remains the following day (16 Nov), as reported by Need To Know.
His mother had passed away five years ago, and her ashes had been kept in a cemetery in nearby Guadalupe.
Two days earlier, Jorge’s cousin had handed him the urn because the family could no longer afford to keep it there.
Jorge had decided to carry it with him to keep his mother close while he found a safe place to store it.
He said: “I’m grateful to the Monterrey police for recovering my mother’s ashes.”
He has since confirmed he will find a secure home for them.
