A former Miss Universe contestant has revealed the heartbreaking news that she’s battling breast cancer.
Jaylene Álvarez posted the update to her 15,200 Instagram followers last Thursday (22 Jan).
She also emphasised that she “overlooked” the biggest symptom at first, advising other women to be vigilant.

The 33-year-old wrote: “Today I’m sharing news that has changed my life: I have breast cancer.
“I don’t say this from fear, but from truth and strength. I’m going through this process supported by God, with firm faith and a peaceful heart, even amid uncertainty.
“To come face to face with death and tell it, ‘Not with me, not now, not yet’ is a moment no one prepares you for – but it’s precisely there that you discover how powerful, strong, and warrior-like you are.”

Following the post, Jaylene appeared on TV to speak more about her diagnosis.
She revealed that several people in her family have suffered from cancer, so the ordeal is “not new” to her.
She explained: “I felt the lump myself – I was the one who discovered the cancer. I must emphasise that, at first, I overlooked it…
“All of this began at the end of October, when I first felt it. Shortly after, I felt it again, and it had grown.”
Jaylene, who is a model and TV presenter, said she was in “shock” when doctors confirmed the diagnosis, as reported by Need To Know.

“I’m currently a breast cancer patient, which is common among women,” she said. “However, for a young woman, it isn’t, right?”
Now undergoing chemotherapy and wearing a wig, Jaylene revealed that thankfully her cancer has not metastasised.
She also plans to share more about her journey on social media to support other women facing similar battles.
Jaylene, who lives with her husband Jan Nieves, represented San Lorenzo in Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2021.

She finished as first runner-up and won the Total Look award for her appearance, outfit, and creativity.
In November 2024, she took part in the Miss Universe final, being responsible for placing the sash on the winner.
Reflecting on her journey online, Jaylene said: “This experience has awakened me. It has helped me grow spiritually, see life through different eyes, and understand that every second is a gift.
“Today I live with more intention, more love, and more purpose. I want to serve more, love better, and be a better citizen of the world we share.”
