A man has been sentenced to 28 years and 10 months in prison for killing his partner, hiding her in a fridge, and covering her with cement after a petty argument.

Marcos do Nascimento Falavigna was convicted on Wednesday (8 Apr) of murder with aggravating factors and of interfering with a corpse.

The horrific crime took place in January 2024 at the home of Nara Denise dos Santos, where Falavigna had been living since October 2020.

Police say Nara, 61, was killed following a trivial row over her bank card, with the cause of death recorded as mechanical asphyxiation.

Falavigna and Nara, a former civil servant, had been in a relationship for five years, with no reports of domestic violence during that time.

The crime came to light after Falavigna, 38, contacted police claiming he had found Nara dead at their home in Osório, Brazil.

He later admitted to the murder but claimed he had been “possessed by an evil entity”, as reported by Need To Know.

Officers found the house in chaos, with religious images scattered around the rooms and atop the fridge, which had been laid on the floor.

Cement had been poured over Nara’s body – apparently to mask decomposition – and her legs had been removed.

During transport to the police station, Falavigna reportedly appeared indifferent, telling officers: “Funny what a little booze can make you do, huh?”

A former security guard, Falavigna had dabbled in several businesses over the years, including a construction company, car wash, and food delivery service.

He had also previously served time in an open prison for theft in 2013.

On social media, he had publicly thanked Nara for caring for his son “like she was his own mother”.

He is not expected to be able to appeal the latest sentence.
