A reckless tourist was caught jumping into the waters of Iguazu Falls to retrieve a dropped mobile phone.

The heart-stopping scene was recorded by other visitors at the natural wonder on Saturday (6 Jun).

The man was seen clambering over the barrier at the edge of the walkway before lowering himself into the river.

The waterway rushes towards a deadly drop just yards away.

Luckily, the visitor, a Brazilian whose identity has not been revealed, managed to pull himself back up onto the walkway without incident.

The popular cascades sit on the international border between Argentina and Brazil.

Saturday’s incident unfolded on the Brazilian side, in Foz do Iguaçu, as reported by Need To Know.

The man was reportedly given a stern talking-to by on-site firefighters before being escorted to the exit.

Crossing, climbing over, or sitting on guardrails at Iguazu Falls is strictly prohibited on both the Brazilian and Argentine sides.

According to Urbia Cataratas, which operates on the Brazilian side, if any item falls into the river, visitors are advised to contact the on-site fire brigade team to assess whether recovery is possible.

This is the third case of people taking risks recorded at the tourist site this year.

In January, at the Devil’s Throat viewpoint on the Argentine side, a tourist crossed protective barriers to retrieve a hat.

He walked along the edge of the abyss, picked up the item, and returned to the walkway.

A month later, at the same spot, visitors recorded a man lifting a baby into the air over the safety barriers, while a woman photographed the act just yards from the waterfall.
