A mum is expecting four identical baby boys in an extraordinary pregnancy said to occur just once in every 15m pregnancies.

María Tapia has reached 30 weeks while carrying Mariano, Maximiliano, Emiliano and Tiago in her womb.

The remarkable pregnancy has stunned doctors in Caucasia, Antioquia, Colombia.

María, 38, and partner Jonatan Zapa have now travelled to Medellín, where specialists will decide how and when the babies should be delivered.

The pregnancy is considered high-risk, with doctors closely monitoring both María and her unborn sons.

The four boys are believed to be monozygotic quadruplets, meaning they are thought to have developed from a single fertilised egg which later split into four embryos.

“They are in the same placenta, in different sacs,” Jonatan told local media.

“They are all boys, they are the same sex. And that is what makes it exceptional.”

The couple were reportedly left speechless when they first discovered they were expecting four babies.

Jonatan recalled how they counted the embryos on the ultrasound: “One, two, three and four.”

The family are now hoping doctors can keep the pregnancy going for as long as safely possible, giving the four boys more time to develop before birth.

María has said she is already desperate to meet them: “Yes, I’m already eager to meet them, to have them, to see them,” she said in a video.

Despite the challenges of carrying four babies, María is reportedly in good health. She has had few pregnancy cravings, although her growing bump is making it increasingly difficult for her to walk.

The couple have welcomed the pregnancy with joy and see it as a gift from God.

“Trusting in God, always trusting in God that everything will turn out well,” María said.

Doctors have warned that the unusual pregnancy also brings potential risks and complications, as reported by Need To Know.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist Eilen Ospina Barrios said: “The probability of this happening is one in 15m pregnancies.”

Colombia has recorded quadruplet births before. According to the country’s statistics agency DANE, there were six quadruplet births in 2025, but none involved four monozygotic boys.

There are also no known previous documented cases of monozygotic quadruplets being born in Colombia.

The exact reason why a single embryo divides in this way is not known, making the arrival of four genetically identical babies exceptionally rare.
