The deadly crash took place on the I-277 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The crash happened shortly after midnight on the Brookshire Freeway inner loop, near Independence Boulevard.
Police allege that Covarrubias-Barron entered the motorway before slowing down, making a U-turn and driving in the wrong direction.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured her making the manoeuvre without her headlights on.
She then allegedly drove around one mile at 58mph before crashing into a Hyundai travelling in the correct direction in the centre lane.
Records show the Hyundai Venue was then pushed into a third vehicle.

Reports state that the driver, My’angel Vonshay Robinson, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
The front passenger and mother-of-one, Audrey Diamond Dawson later died in hospital.
Police said the surviving passengers were still being treated for their injuries.
Arrest records state that the injuries included a broken femur and an organ laceration that caused internal bleeding.
Covarrubias-Barron was allegedly driving a Toyota RAV4 with a passenger in the front.

Police suspected the 19-year-old of driving under the influence.
She was screened at hospital, where she was found to be impaired, police said.
She allegedly told officers she had consumed around five drinks within two hours.
Records also show that she had never held a valid driving licence.
Covarrubias-Barron was arrested on Sunday and faces four felony charges and one misdemeanour.
The charges include two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle and one count of reckless driving.
