Punches, kicks and swinging crutches turned the pitch into a battlefield as the melee spiralled out of control.
The match took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as Uruguay’s Rampla Juniors took on Los Teros de Córdoba of the home nation in a fiercely contested amateur bout.
Earlier in the game, a sliding tackle on a grounded opponent had already triggered insults and an angry backlash.
That flashpoint led to both captains being sent off as the match continued under a cloud of rising tension.
Throughout the contest, one side faced constant taunts and invitations to fight from the opposition, as reported by Need To Know.
Rampla Juniors officials later condemned the violence in a strongly worded statement released on social media.
“We want to make something very clear: we didn’t travel to Argentina to fight,” the statement said.
They stressed they had travelled purely to play football after months of fundraising and sacrifice.
In their statement, the club said it believes in the sport as a force for inclusion, respect and opportunity.
They formally recorded the violence and demanded a serious investigation so that similar incidents don’t happen again.
The statement concluded: “Violence does not represent us. Football, inclusion, and camaraderie do.”
No official response has yet emerged from the Argentine side or tournament organisers.
