A heartbroken mum has revealed her child’s battle after he kept waking up covered in blood due to bone-deep itch.
Katy Jones was getting increasingly worried about her little boy, Lewys, aged three, as the horrific sight was becoming a daily occurrence.
It all started with little patches of eczema behind his legs, which was easily manageable, though quickly escalated into something that infested his tiny body.
It became unbearable for Lewys, as well as his mum, aged 38.
“His eczema completely wiped his body out,” the ITU nurse, from Swansea, Wales, told Need To Know.
“Almost overnight he went from having a few small patches to being covered from his neck to his ankles.

“He would wake up covered in blood every morning because he had scratched so much in his sleep.
“And I would have to strip his bed because the sheets were spotted with blood.
“It was heartbreaking to see.”
Lewys eczema began to worsen when autumn hit in 2025.
It started to impact Katy’s wellbeing, too.
She said: “During the day, I could keep an eye on him and stop the scratching.
“But at night, there was nothing I could do.

“So I hardly slept because I was constantly worrying about him.
“We had tried every cream [imaginable].
“A former NHS nurse specialist showed us techniques, like bandaging his skin with zinc wraps to protect it, but the nights were still incredibly difficult.”
Desperate for a solution, Katy began doing further research into other ways to help her son.
She thought of sleep suits for babies, which have fold-over or built-in mittens, though quickly realised there isn’t anything like that for older kids.
Until she came across Eczema Clothing.
Their sleepwear is made from 100% organic cotton and are designed to help break the itch cycle with built-in mittens on the hands and feet.

While it doesn’t treat the root issue, it aims to protect fragile skin from painful damage.
For Lewys, it’s been life-changing.
She said: “He still wakes up at night, but the mittens protect him from doing damage and so his wake ups have reduced.
“He can still rub if he’s itchy, but he can’t scratch hard enough to make himself bleed.
“For the first time in months, we could all get some proper sleep.”
While the specialist pyjamas have eased the damage Lewys was causing to his body, the issue still prevails.

He has currently been waiting seven months for a dermatology appointment, so the family’s only option right now is to manage it at home.
Katy added: “It’s incredibly frustrating because he’s constantly uncomfortable.
“When you are in the middle of it, it can feel incredibly lonely.
“Until you have watched your child scratch themselves until they bleed, it’s hard to explain just how exhausting and upsetting it is.
“But if sharing our story helps another family find something that makes life even a little bit easier, then it’s worth it.”
