A 14-year-old footballer has been found dead by a river after a four-day hunt.

Anyi Marcela Piamba left her home and did not return.

Her family searched for her for four days before her body was found by passersby on 26 August.

The discovery was made on the banks of the Magdalena River in rural Isnos in Colombia’s Huila department.

She lived in the remote hamlet of Yarumal near San Agustín, which can only be reached on horseback.

Passersby found the teen’s remains at around midday.

Volunteer firefighters recovered the body as prosecutors and forensic teams launched an investigation.

Relatives later identified the victim’s body.

Anyi played girls’ football and was seen as a local prospect.

She trained with Escuela Servijuniors and the OPEN San Agustín project.

Anyi lived with her father and siblings after her mother died about three years ago.

She was a pupil at the Laureano Gómez School.

The school said in a statement: “We reject violence against our children and that this act should not go unpunished.

“Strength to the victim’s family, and a call to look after our girls and boys.”

Open Foundation said: “Today the family of women’s football is in mourning as we say goodbye to a little footballer whose life and dreams were planted on our pitches.

“These girls come to football to play, to dream, to make friends and to build futures.

“That is why, when one of them leaves, we feel a small light go out on our pitch.”

A funeral was held on Saturday at San Agustín’s central parish, as reported by Need To Know.

Neighbours then held a candlelit vigil in Simón Bolívar Park.

They called for “justice and respect for life.”

Prosecutors have yet to confirm how she died.

Forensic samples were sent to Bogotá and the results could take up to six weeks.

Some reports said she may have been seen with a man before she vanished.

That has not been officially confirmed by the authorities.

No arrests have been announced as the investigation continues.
