A £2.2million hypercar has been smashed to pieces in a terrifying high-speed crash as its driver pushed it towards a 310mph record.
Nail-biting footage shows the powerful machine hurtling along a test track before suddenly veering out of control and slamming into a barrier.
The impact is so violent the car’s rear axle is ripped away, leaving the multi-million-pound motor wrecked.
Despite the horrific crash, the test driver somehow manages to climb out of the wreckage unaided.
The vehicle was a Yangwang U9 Xtreme, an ultra-rare electric hypercar built by Chinese manufacturer BYD, as reported by Need To Know.
The 2,977bhp beast had previously reached speeds of almost 310mph, setting a new benchmark of 308.3mph during a run in Germany.
The manufacturer is now hoping to push the car beyond the 310mph barrier in a fresh record attempt in the United Arab Emirates.
It is unclear exactly how fast the vehicle was travelling when it crashed or what caused it to lose control.
Footage of the wreck has since circulated online, showing the devastating damage to the car’s bodywork and rear assembly.
Just 30 examples of the U9 Xtreme are reportedly planned for production, making the wrecked machine an especially costly loss.
