A cavernous “one of a kind” 7,000 sq ft home in a former bomb shelter is currently on sale for $399,900 (£329,570).

The bunker, located in Yucca, Arizona, US, may not look like much from the front gate – this is because it’s predominantly set underground.

Built as a bomb shelter in 1980, the subterranean house stays cool in the summer and traps the heat in the winter.

Situated on an expansive 17.7 acres of land, the house is now a fully functioning home, with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a sauna.

The unique property has plenty of entertaining space, with a spacious sunken living room “ready to invite all of your friends and family over” and a built-in dining room table, which seats 12.

There’s air conditioning to keep the heat of those hot Arizona summers down, as well as a large garage and a deck.

Inside, it’s difficult to escape the property’s original purpose, with its tiled floors, concrete ceilings and exposed brickwork.

Outside, there are views over the desert, stretching towards the Mojave National Preserve.

Just over two acres of the property’s land are fenced, and on it, there’s also a workshop constructed from an old train car and a huge airplane hangar, should you need somewhere to store your plane.

The house is equipped with solar panels to make use of all that desert sun – plus, there’s the capacity to live totally off-grid with a couple of adjustments.

Looking to lay low for a while? Maybe this is the house for you.

The property is on the market for $399,000 with Sandy Dudley at Realty ONE Group Mountain Desert.
