Mahatma Gandhi’s old water pot has sold for £1,400 at auction.

The civil rights leader used the 17cm tall brass jug for three days in 1946.

He was staying in Narsingdi Gram, now Bangladesh, at the time.

It was tipped to sell for up to £5,000 but went for less than a third of price when it went under the hammer.

The 32cm diameter and 6cm deep dish was used at the same time as the water pot.

Gandhi – who died two years later in 1948, aged 78, – was staying with Indian politician Satish Chandra Roy at the time.

The bowl was expected to fetch bids of up to £3,000.

The Auctioneum auction in Bristol ended on Friday (21 Jun) as reported on Need To Know.

A pair of his sandals made of hardwood with woven straps didn’t sell.

Andrew Stowe, from Auctioneum said: “Gandhi is one of those iconic figures from the twentieth century.

“When you picture Gandhi you see the spectacles, the cotton loin cloth and sandals.

“They are an important part of his overall image, and make him instantly recognisable.”

The bowl listing read: “An early to mid 20th century Indian brass water pot, once owned and used by Mahatma Gandhi during his time in Narsingdi Gram.
