A miracle mallard is still alive and surviving despite having a sharp skewer running through its neck.

The brave bird was first seen in the distressing condition in July and has avoided getting assistance ever since.

It was spotted again this month, with images of the duck shared by a concerned citizen on Facebook, on 20 August.

Authorities think the duck was deliberately shot after being targeted in Tarn Woods, Preston, Lancashire.

Even so, it has continued to swim, feed and fly with its mates as reported by Need To Know.
“It’s very upsetting to see this duck with a wooden skewer through its neck, which we believe has been done deliberately,” said an RSPCA spokesperson.

“One of our officers has already been out to try and catch the bird, who is fully mobile, and we’re told has been like this for some time.

“It’s sad to think that someone has targeted a wild animal in this cruel way and we understand what an upsetting sight it is for local people.

“But we’d like to reassure the public that presently the duck is able to eat, swim, socialise and fly.

“The bird is also extremely wary and will fly away when anyone goes near so attempting a boat rescue is also unlikely to result in a successful outcome.

“It is fast, fully mobile and flies off when anyone approaches and that is why it hasn’t been caught.

“We’ve asked the person who kindly got in touch with us to continue monitoring and feeding the duck – which they are happy to do – and to contact us again if the bird is successfully caught.

“We are so grateful for their help and kindness.”

Social media users have been left shocked at the skewer sticking out of the bird’s neck.

“It really breaks my heart that this has been done to such a beautiful creature, so glad to see it doing well I’ve been following for weeks,” said Sophie.

“Can it not be caught with a drop trap?” asked Thomasina.
