A mayoral candidate was shot dead during a political rally.
Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez was leading a procession of vehicles through the streets when at least eight gunmen jumped out in front of her and opened fire.
The 49-year-old had livestreamed part of the rally on Facebook just minutes before her death.

The armed group ambushed the procession and opened fire on Yesenia.
She was struck multiple times, including in the head.
Yesenia died on the street in Texistepec, south-east of Mexico City, Mexico.

Her body was covered with a flag of her political party – Morena, the largest party in the country.
Three other people were killed and at least six others were injured in the shooting, according to the state attorney general’s office.
Police arrived on the scene to secure the area and open an investigation.
Mexican Army soldiers were also deployed to the town as a containment measure, as reported by Need To Know.
Yesenia was a well-known figure in Texistepec where she previously served as a councillor.
She was an advocate for rural communities and vulnerable groups in the region.
During her campaign, she vowed to provide basic services such as drinking water and electricity to underprivileged communities.

She was also an advocate for renewable energies and wanted to oversee a comprehensive and sustainable development of the area.
Yesenia had a diploma in English and used to teach at a high school.
Her husband, councillor Enrique Argüelles Montero, was murdered in a similar situation in November 2022.

The mayoral election is due to take place on 1 June.
The investigation is ongoing.
