Paul Gascoigne once bought his ex-Rangers boss Walter Smith a pair of braces after a pre-match mix-up.

The England football great said he once fell foul of his wrath.

The late Smith – who died four years ago aged 73 – told him to get ‘brace for him.

But Gazza – who spent three years at the Scottish giants – didn’t know what it meant.

The now 58-year-old didn’t realise it meant ‘two goals’.

So he went out and bought Smith a pair of braces to hold up his trousers.

Gazza made the hilarious revelation while on talkSPORT yesterday (13 Oct), as reported on Need To Know.

He said, “I got in trouble with him (Smith) once.

“And he said, ‘You better get me a brace tomorrow.’

“So I said ‘Okay then’.”

Ex-Tottenham and Lazio midfielder Gazza added: “I went to the shop and bought him a brace.

“I didn’t realise a brace was two goals.

“I bought him a brace and said, ‘There you go, gaffer.’

“He said, ‘No, I mean two goals’

“Luckily enough, I got a hat-trick.”

Gazza scored 30 times for Rangers in 74 games between 1995 and 1998.

He was capped 57 times for England.

The troubled ex-footballer – who has battled drink and drug demons – has a new autobiography, Eight, coming out.
