A tourist has been killed in a suspected hit-and-run in a Costa del Sol hotspot after watching her national team progress in the World Cup.

Nikoline Piwoni Høie was reportedly struck by a vehicle, believed to be a lorry, on a dual carriageway in the early hours of Monday (6 Jul).

The driver did not stop at the scene.

The 17-year-old had been reported as missing after enjoying a night out with friends.

Nikoline, who came from Arendal in Norway, was killed on the A-7 motorway near La Cala de Mijas, located about 20 miles from Marbella in southern Spain.

She was last seen at the Funky Buddha nightclub in Puerto Banús with friends, including other young Norwegians.

They had been celebrating Norway’s dramatic 2-1 win over Brazil in the World Cup.

She later took a taxi or similar transport before the incident on the A-7.

Emergency services were alerted at around 5.20am.

Nikoline was found on the road and could not be saved.

She had been due to fly home to Norway that same day.

The Spanish Civil Guard are treating the tourist’s tragic death as a hit-and-run.

They are still trying to identify the vehicle and the driver involved.

No arrests have been made yet.

Nikoline had been holidaying in the Costa del Sol since 19 June, as reported by Need To Know.

Family spokesperson Finn Greve-Isdahl said: “The extended family is in a profound and all-encompassing situation of sorrow.

“They are struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a beloved family member.”

He added that they “humbly thank” the Arendal community for their support.

Nikoline’s stepmother told local media: “She was looking forward to coming home. It is so unfair… This is a nightmare.”

Arendal’s acting mayor, Inger Brokka de Ruiter, called the incident “deeply tragic” and confirmed the local crisis team is supporting relatives and young people affected.

The Norwegian Foreign Ministry has been informed and the embassy is ready to assist.
The investigation is ongoing.
