Pensioner pooch whose fur grew so long he looked like a dirty mop has make-over

A pensioner pooch whose fur grew so long he looked like a dirty mop has had a make-over.

The 13-year-old dog – named Larry – was in such a bad state it was hard to tell what breed he was.

The white Maltese poodle cross had been neglected by his former owner and was then living as a stray.

His fur was found covered in poo and wee and clumped together like dreadlocks.

Poor Larry was unable to see, run, or even stretch his legs.

He was abandoned in Crewe, Cheshire on 2 May before going to the RSPCA’s Stapeley Grange Wildlife Hospital and Cattery in Nantwich.

Staff chopped off his fur which weighed 1.7kg (3.7lb).

Larry is now making doggy pals at the animal charity’s Wirral and Chester branch animal home, in Wallasey.

Centre manager Kay Hawthorn said: “His transformation has been incredible.

“Under the huge matted clumps of fur, a sweet and gentle dog has emerged who’s been given a new lease of life.

“He was struggling to get around properly and it must have been so uncomfortable for him.”

She added: “He’s still a little hand shy and winces if you suddenly get too close.

“But if you take it very slowly and go under his chin he really enjoys a good fuss.”

RSPCA inspector Louise Showering said: “Larry was in an appalling condition, his coat looked like a pile of dirty old rags and it’s likely he’d been neglected for a prolonged period of time.

“We think he was probably abandoned, or deliberately left to stray.”

The charity is desperately trying to trace his old owner and appealed for witnesses to come forward.
