Romantic vegans can now eat plant-based oysters – but they are still served in actual shells.
The slippery molluscs are made from a mushroom and seaweed formulated base.
Oysters are considered aphrodisiacs along with other libido boosting food such as chocolate and bananas.
They are typically eaten straight out of their shells.
However, this vegan version are served in sterilised oyster shells that have been used at restaurants.
Alternatively, they can also be served in ceramic shells made by local artists.
The alternative oyster prototype has been created by cell-based startup Pearlita.
The company has also veganised clam chowder and crab meat.
There is a debate about whether eating oysters is compatible with a vegan diet.
Herbivores have divided opinions on if oysters feel pain or not.
Vegans were undecided on if they would try them.
One customer said: “I love this idea but this isn’t vegan.
”All you’re doing is opening a market to continue the killing of oysters.
”It’s the same reason why vegans don’t wear fur.
“Just because they’re dead doesn’t mean we should wear their skin or be slurping from their shells or homes.”
