A son had to dig his own mother’s grave in a cemetery after workers filled her allocated plot and claimed there was no more space.
The unnamed woman passed away on 10 November and her son visited the graveyard the following day.
He requested a plot, which they were told would be ready for later that day.
The son returned to the cemetery and noticed that the allocated grave had been taken by another coffin.
When he confronted workers, he was told that the cemetery was now full and there were no other places to dig a grave.
According to the police, family members then found a free space in the cemetery and dug the grave themselves, only finishing the task late at night.
The son then filed a complaint with the police in Periquito, about 385 miles north of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
The video shows two family members starting work on the grave with shovels and hoes.
The camerawoman says: “Here, my people.
“We voted for the new mayor to come and this is it – family members are digging the grave themselves to bury their relative.
“The funniest thing is, we’re going to be here digging the grave until late and there aren’t even any lights in the cemetery.”
In response to the family’s complaint, Ronaldo Wiler, Municipal Secretary of Environment and Agriculture, called for residents to “have a little calm”.
He said: “It’s difficult to call for calm in moments of loss and mourning, but we do ask that the population has a little calm, a little belief.

“We are looking to do our best and we will do the best for the population.”
Wiler added that he is looking into the possibility of opening new burial spaces for as soon as possible.
