He didn’t have a driving licence and the tiny hatchback was uninsured.
As well as his new fiancée, Gessica, his cousin was also in the car when it slammed into a pole in Rosarno near Reggio Calabria, Italy.
The trio had gone out to celebrate Gessica’s birthday after the proposal.
The accident happened when the three were returning from their night out.
The cousin, 20, survived the crash and was taken to the ICU of a hospital in Reggio Calabria.
Local media say his condition is “very serious”.
Just a few hours before the accident, Francesco had taken to Instagram to post a heartfelt tribute to the love of his life.

He wrote: “Not only is it your birthday. I love you more than my own life.
“We’ve pledged ourselves to each other until death.”
The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Palmi is overseeing the investigation.
