The clip shows the match official backpedalling as the reptile rears its head at him.
A young man runs onto the pitch from the sidelines to lend a hand.
He uses his backpack to try to coax the troublesome reptile off the pitch.
The snake reacts by striking out at the young man several times.
The ref gently steps on the animal to grab it, but apparently receives a couple of bites on his hand.
He flings the reptile against an embankment at the side of the pitch and it is seen slithering away as the video ends.
The bizarre scenes were filmed during a match between FK Gornji Sinkovac and Radnik Šišinac in Leskovac, Serbia, on 14 April.
A Gornji Sinkovac spokesperson said the snake was uninjured in the incident.
They also stated that the ref was bitten twice by the aggressive reptile.
The statement read: “A very unusual situation happened. A snake appeared on the field, which led to the match being interrupted.
“It was incredible that the referee was able to catch the snake and remove it from the field.
“The snake was not injured.
“According to current information, it turned out that the referee suffered two bites during this encounter.”
One local commented: “Kudos to the ref for being so brave.”

Jovana said: “Faced with that situation, I would run faster than Usain Bolt.”
Aleksandar wrote: “Well done to the ref.”
Sloba joked: “They could try mowing the pitch sometime…”

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, as reported by Need To Know.
