The turnout was 10 times larger than Madge’s previous record of 130,000 at Parc des Sceaux in Paris in 1987.
However, not everything went smoothly among the throngs of spectators on the night.
One man was reportedly assaulted and thrown in a bin for allegedly stealing from concert-goers, as reported by Need To Know.
A clip shows a group dragging the suspect towards the waste container before apparently hitting him in the face several times.
They then pick the man up by his legs and hurl him inside, while thumping the back of his head.
The group close the container lid and cheer as the clip comes to an end.
According to local reports, the Military Police’s crowd control squad detained those involved in the attack against the man.
It is unclear if the suspect was also arrested for alleged theft.
Madonna performed a string of hits for her fans including ‘Like a Virgin’, ‘Like a Prayer’ and ‘Hung Up’.
In 2006, the Rolling Stones played a concert on Copacabana Beach for 1.2m fans.
In 1994, Rod Stewart performed the largest free rock concert ever when around four million people turned up for his New Year’s Eve show on the beach.
