The plane took off from Makassar, Indonesia, bound for Medina in Saudi Arabia.
The Boeing 747-400 aircraft numbered 1105 had 18 crew members and 450 passengers, many of whom were due to take part in the Hajj annual pilgrimage in Mecca.
The aircraft immediately returned to the airport after “fire was observed in one of the engines”, a Garuda Indonesia spokesperson said.
The plane returned to the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport at around 5.15pm on 15 May.
No one on board was injured.
Garuda Indonesia president, Irfan Setiaputra said in a statement: “The captain discovered that one of the engines was on fire and immediately decided that further inspection was necessary to determine whether the engine was faulty.
“The decision was made immediately after the aircraft took off.”
The airline said they provided accommodation for the affected passengers.
Travellers had to take alternative flights to Saudi Arabia later the same day.
Meanwhile, the plane has been kept grounded at the airport while safety inspections are carried out, as reported by Need To Know.
