The former couple’s three-year-old daughter was present at the time, according to local media.
Gomes has been arrested and is being held in custody on remand.
He allegedly struck her on the head “with a broom handle.”
The couple had separated six months earlier and Maria Eduarda was in a new relationship.
Maria Eduarda’s mum, Fátima de Carvalho Vasconcelos, told local media: “He never accepted the separation.
“He found out that my daughter was with another man.
“He’s in jail, but that won’t bring my daughter back.”
Before being killed, Maria Eduarda had gone to pick up her daughter from her minder’s house, close to where Thauan lives.
The victim’s niece Maíra Azevedo said: “She always picks up her daughter after work.
Heartbreakingly, the victim’s parents say her daughter keeps asking for her mum, as reported by Need to Know.
Fátima said: “Her life was all about working to give the best for my granddaughter.
“Now I’m without my daughter, and my granddaughter keeps asking for her mother.
“What am I supposed to say?
“We want justice. We want to know if someone could have saved her, if anyone could have called the police.”
Maria Eduarda was laid to rest in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday (26 May).
