Two brothers have been given lengthy jail terms again for killing their dad with a rolling pin and a screwdriver.

Alessio and Simone Scalamandrè fatally injured their father, Pasquale, after an argument in their home turned violent.

Pasquale, 62, had turned up at their flat in Genoa, Italy, despite a restraining order prohibiting him from doing so.

He tried to persuade Alessio, then 28, to withdraw a complaint against him.

Alessio, now 32, had reported his dad for allegedly abusing and threatening his mother, Laura Di Santo, forcing her to move to a refuge.

Alessio called the police himself after injuring his dad, a retired bus driver, on 10 August 2020.

First responders arrived on the scene, but they were unable to save Pasquale.

The bloodstained murder weapons were found next to his body.

Alessio and his brother, then 20, were arrested and subsequently charged with joint voluntary manslaughter.

The former admitted his guilt but insisted he hadn’t intended to kill his father.

In February 2022, they were given 21 and 14 years in prison respectively.

But in November of that year, an appeal court acquitted Simone, now 24, confirming his brother’s sentence.

However, Italy’s highest appeal court ended up annulling the decision on the basis that Simone’s acquittal wasn’t justified adequately.

It ordered a retrial in Milan, as reported on Need to Know.

On Wednesday (17 Apr), the new appeal court simply confirmed the siblings’ original sentences.

The case is still set to continue, as the defendants’ lawyers have said they will appeal the verdict.

Alessio has always taken responsibility for the crime and has always protested his brother’s innocence.

The siblings’ mother spoke to local media about her late husband in 2022.

She said: “He made our lives impossible, he was obsessive and threatened me with death multiple times.

“He did everything except being a father.”

She described their original sentences, now reconfirmed, as “heavy and absolutely unjust”.

Laura added: “It was my husband who grabbed the rolling pin to hit them, Alessio disarmed him, and then he lost control.”
