He told his 27-year-old passenger to get out as he tried to steer the vehicle back on course.
But as he attempted the manoeuvre, the Jeep plunged around 600m (1,969 ft) down a sheer drop.
Luca was killed instantly.
Due to the thick fog and rain, it took rescue workers several hours to reach the accident site on Monte Genzana in L’Aquila Province.
His body wasn’t recovered until Tuesday (20 Aug) morning.
Luca was from Albano Laziale near Rome, as reported by NeedToKnow.
He was on holiday in the Abruzzo region and was due to return to his home in the US on Tuesday.
Luca, an experienced driver, had competed in Formula 3000, International Formula Master, and Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 racing before turning to coaching about 15 years ago.
His social media bio says: “Live in the now.”
British racing driver Chloe Chong, who worked under Luca in F1 Academy, said: “Thanks for everything, Luca.
“Your personality and enthusiasm lit up every room you entered.
“I will always remember all the moments we had together.”
