The quake struck at 5:1am yesterday (26 Aug).
Its epicentre was located about 58km (36 miles) west of Sines, in Portugal.
The coastal town is located roughly halfway between Lisbon and the Algarve.
Thousands of Brits head to Portugal every year for their summer holidays.
The tremors were felt most intensely in Lisbon, Sines, and Setúbal, according to reports.
But they were also felt in Porto in northern Portugal, and even in Spain and Morocco.
At least six aftershocks were felt after the initial quake, but they were minor, as reported by Need To Know.
No injuries were reported, but locals and tourists were startled by the early-morning jolt.
Brit Ben said: “Woken up at 5am by an earthquake while on holiday in Portugal.
“Was not expecting that.”
Another – named Marcus – added: “I received a call from my sister who lives in Belgium and is on vacation in Portugal in Maia, near Porto.
“On the 8th floor, where she felt the whole building shake for 10 seconds.
“She’s in a state of shock.”
Ernesto said: “A first for me at 5:11am I woke up feeling the bed shaking, my first earthquake.”
The last time Portugal experienced such a strong earthquake was in 2009, when a 5.9 magnitude quake struck.
André Fernandes, of the Civil Protection, ruled out tsunami fears.
He said: “There was no concern (about a tsunami).
“Especially since scientific data indicates that such warnings are only issued for earthquakes of six or higher on the Richter scale.”
