A building fire forced a couple and their baby to jump to their deaths from their seventh-floor flat.

Luiz Evaldo Lima, Graciane Rosa de Oliveira, and Léo Oliveira de Lima died after the plunge yesterday (27 Aug).

Léo was just two months old.

Felipe Ferreira, who lives in the neighbouring building, recalled: “We saw a couple with a child at the seventh-floor window.

“We started shouting for them not to jump, but the flames quickly engulfed them.

“In the end, they jumped and died instantly.”

Capt Fábio José Rodrigues of the Goiás Fire Department told local media: “They died out of desperation.”

The cause of the fire in the block of flats in Valparaíso de Goiás near Brasília, Brazil, is under investigation.

Maj. Maurício Correia of the Goiás Fire Department speculated: “It could have been something that exploded and affected the gas pipes.”

According to an anonymous witness, the flames spread “very quickly and violently”.

Graciane, 35, was an eyelash technician and Luiz, 28, was a waiter, as reported by Need To Know.

The couple first met in 2019 at the wholesaler where Luiz worked at the time.

Two other people were rescued from the couple’s flat on Tuesday morning.

One is Graciane’s mother and the other is believed to be an upholsterer.

Graciane also had a seven-year-old daughter, who was at school when the fire ripped through the building’s seventh floor.
