A young mother has shared her harrowing experience of escaping a fire at a tower block in Dagenham, East London, where crucial safety measures failed.
Cydney Parker, 26, explained how she had to flee her apartment in the early hours, still in her pyjamas, as thick black smoke filled the corridor outside her flat.
Despite previous false alarms, the building’s fire alarms did not sound during the emergency, leaving residents unaware of the danger.

To make matters worse, Parker discovered that a vital escape route was blocked by a padlocked fire gate.
Desperate to escape, she and others had to find a way to climb over a fence, shouting for help from police officers when they became stuck on top.
Parker, who feared she might lose all her belongings in the fire, criticized the building’s management for their handling of the situation.
She expressed anger that the alarms, which had repeatedly gone off without cause in the past, failed to function when they were most needed.
“That block needs to get shut down, and we all need to get housed,” she stated, hoping that others would share her frustration.
The fire at the Spectrum building required the response of over 40 fire engines. Remarkably, all residents survived, with only a few needing hospital treatment.
The London Fire Brigade revealed that they had been aware of several fire safety issues at the building before the incident, including non-compliant cladding, which was in the process of being removed.
Investigators are now examining the cause of the fire and whether more could have been done to protect residents. Efforts to reach the building’s management for comment were unsuccessful.
Residents who have been displaced by the fire are currently being housed at a nearby leisure center, where they face an uncertain future.
Among them is Drilon Nezaj, who credits his 17-month-old daughter with saving their lives by inadvertently keeping them away from their flat on the night of the fire.
Another resident, Kasia, tearfully recounted how she escaped with her partner and their dog, though their flat was completely destroyed.
As the community reels from the disaster, attention is shifting to the fire safety issues that plagued the building, with many questioning whether enough was done to prevent such a tragedy.
