A “miracle” mum has taken her firstborn home after undergoing an operation to remove a tumour in the middle of her skull.
Elena Alladio was three months pregnant when she began experiencing blurred vision.
“I could barely see anything,” she recalled.

Her gynaecologist advised her to see an eye specialist, who referred her to a hospital.

There, she was diagnosed with a rare tumour measuring about 1.5 cm across.
It was developing in an area of her skull that control eye movements and was beginning to compress the nerves.

Elena, 36, was four months pregnant when she underwent an operation to remove the chondrosarcoma.
It was performed via a minimally invasive endoscopic technique allowing access to her clivus through the nostrils.
The clivus is a bone at the base of the skull, near the spine.
The three-hour procedure carried out under anaesthetic in Turin, Italy, was successful.

Elena’s healthy newborn, Edoardo, was delivered via caesarean section on 24 September.
Now, both mum and son are at home with their husband and dad, Alessio, and are doing well, as reported by Need To Know.

Elena will now be able to complete the proton therapy – a type of radiation therapy – she still needs to fully rid her of the tumour.
The Sant’Anna Hospital, where she was treated, said: “Very few cases have been described to date.
“And never one localised in the skull, especially during a pregnancy.”
Elena told local media: “I was afraid I wouldn’t make it, but then I felt the joy of holding my son in my arms.
“I owe my gratitude to the doctors.”
