Leonardo DiCaprio has had a newly discovered snake named after him.
The serpent has been called the Anguiculus dicaprioi or simply the DiCaprio Himalayan snake.
The Titanic star, 49, was honoured due to his long history of environmental activism.

The snake is from the Gongylosoma genus of the reptiles of the Colubroidea superfamily.
The reptile, which boasts dozens of teeth, was found in the Himalayas – four years ago.
An ongoing study of the species was published by Nature on Monday (Oct 21)

The copper-coloured snakes were discovered in Nepal and the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
They were observed between June and September but were not seen during the rest of the year.
They are relatively small and reach lengths of up to 22 inches.
The snakes have “short heads”, “large nostrils”, and a “steeply domed snout”.
They also have a grey band that appears like a “collar” around their neck.

Scientists said they were “basking” on muddy mountain roads and “remained motionless until caught and made no attempts to bite”, as reported by Need To Know.
The research team consisted of Zeeshan Mirza, Saunak Pal, H. T. Lalremsanga, Virender Bhardwaj, Gernot Vogel, Harshil Patel, and Patrick Campbell.

Researchers explained that DiCaprio “has been actively involved in creating awareness about global climate change and increased biodiversity loss” for many years.
In 1998, he launched the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation which “supports over 35 innovative conservation projects around the world”.

The Hollywood star said in 2016: “At a young age, I was very saddened by species that had become extinct as the result of man-made activity.
“So that led me on a long sort of journey to get me involved in environmental issues.”
