A crazed patient who held a nurse hostage with a glass shard was shot by cops during a tense stand-off.

Police and ICU staff kept their distance as topless Luiz Cláudio Dias held the woman in a headlock.

They could be seen negotiating with him as he used her as a human shield and held the shard close to her neck.

Moments later, he became more agitated and began to tighten his grip.

The nursing assistant grabbed his arm and tried to pull it away from her neck in a bid to free herself.

One of the officers drew his gun and a shot was heard.

Shouts of fright were heard as the man wincesdon the floor in pain and was promptly pinned to the floor by an officer’s boot.

The drama unfolded on Saturday (18 January) in Morrinhos, south of Brasilia, Brazil.

The police say the shot was aimed at his leg but he moved as the gun was fired and was hit in the abdomen.

He received prompt treatment but ended up dying from the injury.

The 59-year-old dad had been receiving kidney treatment for three days, as reported by Need To Know.

Morrinhos mayor Maycllyn Carreiro told local media: “It’s not uncommon for patients to experience delusions and sometimes psychotic episodes during ICU treatment.

“However, this particular incident was completely unusual.

“He got out of bed, ripped off the equipment, and started speaking incoherently.

“He ran to the bathroom, broke the glass, grabbed the nurse, who was leaving the women’s toilet, strangled her with a tie, and pressed the glass to her neck.”

The police said in a statement: “Crisis management protocols were initiated to free the victim.

“Despite attempts to verbally convince the suspect to release the victim, he remained aggressive and repeated his threats.

“Given the imminent danger to the victim, it became necessary to fire a weapon to neutralise the aggression and protect the hostage’s physical safety.”

An internal investigation into the shooting is underway.

Dias’s son, Luiz Henrique, wrote on social media: “They killed the love of my life. My hero, my father.

“What a cowardly act. Justice will be served.”
