6 Hidden Costs of Neglecting Your Vehicle

Neglecting your vehicle is obviously dangerous. But it’s also pretty expensive and keeps costs much higher than they typically would be. With the cost of living still pretty high these days, vehicle repairs would be just another headache. Here are some ways your car can cost you.

Poor Wheel Responsiveness

Ignoring regular maintenance causes issues across the whole vehicle. Some are relatively minor, but others can be costly or deadly. The wheels of a car take a lot of force and pressure and need to be checked regularly because of this. Over time, the responsiveness of the wheels through the steering column degrades. However, regular alloy wheel repair when necessary can keep your wheels healthy and balanced, avoiding a potentially massive bill for a big job.

Neglecting Your Vehicle Compromises Safety

Not all costs are monetary. There are real-life costs of not keeping your vehicle well-maintained. There were 1,645 deaths on UK roads because of collisions in 2023. Of course, there are many reasons an accident happens. There are also some common ways you can cause an incident:

  • Worn tyres reduce the road grip of your vehicle and can cause an incident.
  • Failing brakes are a significant worry that should be addressed immediately.
  • Non-functional lights cause confusion to other drivers and reduce your visibility.

Reduced Fuel Efficiency

Will the price of fuel ever stop going up? It seems like every other week the cost of petrol and diesel increases! Even with an EV, you can still feel the pinch as electricity prices head to the stratosphere! Poor vehicle maintenance can lead to further costs through reduced fuel efficiency. Not driving well, such as braking hard and accelerating too fast, uses more fuel. However, low tyre pressure, clogged filters, and even driving too gently can affect fuel economy.

Lower Resale from Neglecting Your Vehicle

Everyone knows that a car loses half its value once it rolls out of the lot! But you don’t need to go out of your way to reduce the value even more! Not looking after your vehicle will reduce how much it is worth, resulting in even more financial loss. Here are some things to look out for:

  • Damage to the interior is a major issue that causes buyers to pass on the car.
  • Scratches that can’t be easily removed are a big contributor to a lower resale value.
  • Unnecessary modifications are unsightly and hard to remove, so be aware of these too.

No one wants an unsightly car interior, and a buyer will definitely notice torn seats or scratched up dashboards. A buyer also doesn’t want to have to take a car in for repairs just after buying it, and scratches won’t be appreciated. Mods look good to you, but will put off almost all buyers.

Small Issues Become Big Ones

Like health, looking after the car with regular maintenance and checks ensures your mechanic can catch minor issues. In many cases, a minor issue doesn’t seem like much. But small problems can become big ones when left to chance. For example, that squeaking you hear when you break isn’t a quartet of tiny mice! It could indicate the rotors are on their way out. So don’t sleep on it! If you notice something, then always take your car in for a quick once over.

Neglecting Your Vehicle Causes Engine Issues

The check engine light comes on for very good reasons, usually at the beginning of an issue. Yet some studies have worryingly concluded that up to 50% of drivers actually ignore the check engine light. Some of the most expensive issues that cause the light to come on are:

  • The catalytic converter of the engine is failing, and these can be expensive to replace.
  • A failing oxygen sensor leads to vastly reduced fuel efficiency, costing you money.
  • In a four-wheel drive car, the transfer case shift motor can fail with a hefty repair bill.

A FLOWER Check Is All It Takes

Booking your car with a mechanic is, of course, another expense. But there is no price on safety. However, you don’t need to worry about every little thing, and a FLOWER check is all it takes to ensure your car is fit for the road. Every week, check the Fuel, Lights, Oil, Water, Electrics, and Rubber. This helps make sure you notice anything that isn’t working so you can catch it early and prevent small problems from becoming major, unsafe, and costly ones.

Summary

The steering can become less responsive through neglecting your vehicle, causing major issues that require expensive repairs. You will also get much less from the resale of your vehicle. To catch small problems, you can do a regular FLOWER check to verify the safety of the car.
