A tourist boat has been evacuated after its engine caught fire with about 85 passengers on board.

Some of the passengers were covered from head to toe in the chemical as they spilt out onto the pier from the rear of the boat.

The blaze began at around 4pm on Sunday (9 Feb) on the Idola Express fast boat from Nusa Penida island to Bali island in Indonesia.
Officials say flames suddenly appeared as the captain tried to start the engine shortly after everyone had boarded.
Klungkung Police Public Relations Officer Iptu Agus Widiono told local media: “As the engine started, one of them suddenly made a small popping sound, followed by a fire, though it wasn’t too large.

“The boat crew and port staff quickly responded, using two fire extinguishers on board and one from the port area to put out the flames.
“The fire was fully extinguished in about two minutes.”
Despite panic spreading among those on board, there were no casualties or injuries.
The boat also remained seaworthy, as reported by Need To Know.

Widiono said: “After coordinating with the harbourmaster and the boat captain, it was confirmed that there was no serious damage, and the remaining four engines were still functioning normally.
“Additionally, no parts of the boat were burned, so it was deemed safe to depart.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it’s suspected that an electrical short circuit triggered sparks in a propulsion motor.
