7 Things Customers Will Judge Your Products On

There’s a little-known secret in business: customers are massive judgers. They can’t help themselves. From the moment your product waltzes into their lives, they’re eyeing it like a detective at a crime scene, ready to uncover its every flaw. So, if you want to avoid getting thrown into their metaphorical dustbin of doom, you’ll need to address the full spectrum of their (very human) scrutiny. Below are seven ways your products will be judged—read on, or risk a life sentence of one-star reviews.

1. Looks, Looks, Looks

Ever noticed how we’re all suckers for a bit of eye candy? That goes for your product, too. If it’s as aesthetically pleasing as an unkempt sock drawer, customers will roll their eyes faster than you can say “uninstall.” Whether it’s sleek packaging, charming design lines, or a strategic pop of colour, remember that first impressions matter in business. If your product visually screams “I was assembled by trolls,” it won’t stand a chance—no matter how brilliant its performance.

2. The Touchy-Feely Factor

Your product might look great in photos, but does it feel like it’s about to crumble if someone breathes on it? Customers will judge your build quality without mercy. Textures, weight, and overall sturdiness combine to form that snap judgement of “cheap tat” versus “quality craftsmanship.” If you can’t resist cutting corners, do yourself a favour and get sturdier materials before your customers revolt en masse.

3. The Boring (But Crucial) Tech Bits

For electronics, it’s not all about shimmering LED lights and futuristic packaging. If you’re peddling gadgets, the real sorcery happens under the bonnet—particularly in PCB manufacturing. No one wants a device that overheats like a toaster or emits concerning sparks. A well-designed circuit board keeps the product reliable, safe, and free of ‘electrical meltdown in aisle five’ headlines. Trust me, nobody’s going to rave about your gadget if it randomly bursts into flames.

4. Performance & Reliability

You can dazzle customers with visuals and fancy adverts till you’re blue in the face, but if your product conks out within five minutes, you’ll see returns flying in like seagulls to a chip shop. From software speed to battery life, or from mechanical durability to overall user experience, consistency is king. People want to rely on your product without having to pray to the tech gods every time they switch it on.

5. Price vs. Value

Yes, there is a difference. Customers will do a quick mental dance: “Am I getting my money’s worth?” If you price your product too high without delivering something that feels premium, you’ll come across like an overpriced bag of crisps. If it’s suspiciously cheap, prepare for raised eyebrows about build quality. Strike that sweet spot where buyers feel they’ve snagged a gem at a fair price, and they’ll defend you to their friends like a proud parent.

6. Brand Reputation

Word travels fast, thanks to social media and the never-ending gossip chain that is the internet. If customers have even a whiff of your brand being shady—maybe poor after-sales support or a fiasco involving missed delivery dates—they’ll judge any new product you release with extra cynicism. Your brand persona matters, so keep it squeaky clean, relatable, and downright lovable.

7. That Special Something

Finally, don’t underestimate the intangible. Sometimes, a product just clicks. Whether it’s the witty instructions in the box, a quirky design flourish, or a philanthropic tie-in that tugs at the heartstrings—customers remember those little extras. If you’re gunning for genuine loyalty, give them a reason to choose you over the legion of near-identical items on the market.

Customers may be harsh judges but if you get these seven things right, you will be judged well!
