After it had become apparent that a fire had broken out, the plane circled over some water for almost two hours before it was able to land.
According to a passenger, during this time, passengers learned of the problem with the aircraft.
That, paired with the fact that they had circled in the air, caused some of them to become upset, as reported by Need To Know.
Firefighters evacuated the plane to ensure that there were no further fire hazards.
The AirAsia flight had initially taken off at approximately 9.59 pm and was headed for Shenzhen, China, yesterday (26 Mar).
Both the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department and the operations officer, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, said they were alerted about the incident at 10.37 pm.
The plane circled over the Malacca Strait, a narrow stretch of water near the Malay Peninsula, before it landed back at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia.
According to the operations officer, the Airbus A320-216 suffered a “pneumatic ducting burst’”
He stated that the fire was contained by the aircraft’s onboard Halon system before landing.
AirAsia has been approached for comment.
