The Dorset Council Waste Services centre was immediately closed for public safety.
The two neighbouring sites – HRC and Wessex Water’s facility – were evacuated as a safety precaution while the police investigated.
The ordnance was found as Britain commemorated the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.
Dorset Council said the rusted shell was thought to be a World War II round, as reported by Need To Know.

The authority said it expected the tip to reopen on Friday (9 May).
A spokesperson said on Thursday: “Dorchester Household Recycling Centre is currently closed for public safety reasons as emergency services respond to an incident.
“Potentially explosive ordnance believed to be a WWII-era anti-tank round has been discovered at the scrapyard next door.
“Quite a coincidence given that it’s VE Day.
“Therefore the two neighbouring sites – Household Recycling Centre and Wessex Water’s facility – have been evacuated as a safety precaution while the police investigate.”
