The official also revealed that 69 people were injured in Muğla after jumping from heights “in panic”.
Turkey’s Disaster And Emergency Management Presidency said the quake struck at 2:17am today (3 Jun).
Its epicentre was in the Mediterranean Sea, off Marmaris – which is popular with British tourists – on the Turkish Riviera.
History student Kareena Kochar shared a video showing herself and her friend on holiday in nearby İçmeler.
She wrote: “We got woken up to a level 6 earthquake at 2am. Guys, that was SCARY.”
Another tourist, who did not reveal her name, shared footage from the beach in Marmaris later on, as reported by Need To Know.
She wrote: “I’ve never heard anything like it. The noise Mother Nature made was on another level. I hope I never hear it again.”
She also filmed two cracks in the wall of her accommodation, which “went unnoticed till it got light”.

The quake was felt in surrounding areas, including the Greek island of Rhodes, but no major damage was reported in either country.
Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Turkey, which is located on major fault lines.
A magnitude-7.8 quake in 2023 killed over 53,000 people in the country, as well as 6,000 in neighbouring Syria.
