The fire destroyed a building used by a Sea Scouts group, leaving them homeless.

Leaders described the incident as “devastating”, as reported by Need To Know.

Firefighters were called to battle the fire at the Imperial Recreation Ground in Exmouth, Devon on Monday, (11 Aug).

Police said huge amounts of equipment were destroyed and the heat of the fire also affected nearby containers and melted kayaks.

An Exmouth Police spokesperson added: “The heat of the fire also affected nearby containers containing their kayaks and has melted a number of them.

“This is devastating for them and the youths in our community that they support.”

A spokesperson for neighbouring 3rd Exmouth Scout Group said: “I have spoken to leaders of the 5th Exmouth Scouts and they have lost everything.

“As a scout leader I cannot imagine how they are all feeling.

“The devastation is awful.

“My son went there so I know how many memories will have been lost.

“The 3rd are absolutely gutted for 5th and will help and support them in whatever way we can, they will rise from the ashes with the support of all their fellow scouters and the community.”
