A beach was cordoned off after an ‘explosive’ was found on the shore, with a bomb squad called to the scene.

The ordnance was reported to the coastguard, with officers rushing to the scene.

A 100-metre cordon was established around the ‘explosive’ item.

Greenock Coastguard arrived at the scene yesterday lunchtime (24 Aug).

The ordnance was discovered on a beach between Lunderston Bay and Inverkip, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Shortly after the area was secured, the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team arrived at the scene.

Members of the public watched on cautiously as the item was removed by the bomb squad.

Walkers have now been warned to keep their hands off unidentifiable items washing up on land, as reported by Need To Know.

The report made by a beachgoer is an example of what to do when coming across a suspicious item on the shoreline.

A spokesperson for Greenock Coastguard Rescue Team said: “Once on scene, an initial assessment was carried out and photos taken which were then passed to an explosive ordnance disposal team (EOD).

“We’d like to thank the public for their patience and understanding during this time.

“Greenock Coastguard Rescue Team would also like to extend their thanks to the member of the public who reported this.

“The member of the public did exactly the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard.

“We continue to advise the public of the following if they find something along the coast which they think could be a discarded maritime distress flare or ordnance.

“Do not touch or move the item. Keep a safe distance at all times. Dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately.

“Provide as much information as possible, including exact location.

“It is not uncommon for suspect items to be washed up along the coast, especially following spells of bad weather.

“If you are venturing for a walk along the coast, please take care, stay safe and if in doubt – get us out.”
